Monroe Street Downtown Sidewalk Enhancements
The City of Tallahassee is preparing sidewalk plans for Monroe Street from Jefferson Street to Call Street. The project begins at the north side of the Jefferson Street intersection and ends on the south side of the Call Street intersection. Improvements will be implemented on both the east side and west side of Monroe Street. An exception, within these limits, is the Chain of Parks block, which will remain unchanged.
The project will widen the existing sidewalk, reconstruct parking so that the corridor has parallel parking, add handicap parking, remove and replace all street trees, and replace existing streetlights. The project shall provide ADA access for downtown pedestrians and business patrons.
While upgrading sidewalks and parking, the City will also adjust underground utilities and correct existing drainage issues. Utility improvements include upgrading the required water, sewer, electric, and communication utilities, which will be adjusted wherever possible to avoid conflicts with other infrastructure.
The Downtown Improvement Authority (DIA) hoted two public meetings, one on December 12, 2022, and one on December 11, 2023. At these meetings, City staff from the Underground Utilities & Public Infrastructure Department and the consultant (Inovia Consulting Group) were present to discuss the sidewalk improvements project, answer questions, and receive feedback from citizens and stakeholders.
More information about this project will be shared at the scheduled CRA board meeting in February 2024.
